The importance of proper water chemistry

Water chemistry and proper maintenance are the most important factors correlated with the life and appearance of your new pool interior. Failure to properly maintain water chemistry and maintenance can lead to deterioration, scaling, and discoloration among other issues. It is highly recommended that you have a certified pool professional maintain your pool.

Water chemistry for new plastered pool interiors

New pool interiors require a specialized start up procedure. Five Star Pools Inc. utilizes specific water chemicals and processes to ensure that your pools water is at optimum levels ensuring proper hydration, curing, and aesthetics.


* it is highly recommended that salt chlorination systems and automatic vacuum systems not be used for a period of 30 days after new plaster installation. Failure to follow this recommendation could lead to detrimental affects  integrity and appearance of your new pool interior.


Five Star Pools, Inc.  utilizes an NPC certied pool start-up technician.

DAILY WATER CHEMISTRY AFTER 28 DAYS

According to the National Plasterer's Council, the recommended water chemistry guidelines are as followed:


Maintain water chemistry using the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) between 0.0 and +0.3


  • Free Chlorine = 1 to 3 ppm
  • Total Chlorine = 1 to 3 ppm
  • pH = 7.2 to 7.6
  • Carbonate Alkalinity = 80 to 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness = 200 to 400 ppm
  • Cyanuric Acid = 30 to 50 ppm
  • TDS = 300 to 1800 ppm (non-salt pools)
  • Salt Level = 2500 to 3500 ppm (salt chlorination ONLY)
